Christian Celebrities: Genuine Faith or Just PR?

Something feels deeply off the last few years, and a lot of people are taking notice. We are watching a huge cultural shift where the entertainment industry is no longer just mocking faith; they are repackaging it. The world has discovered that fighting the church directly does not work, so instead, they have decided to market a stylized version of it. 

We see this clearly in how Hollywood handles the sudden wave of high-profile Christian conversions. For decades, the ecumenical movement has worked behind the scenes to blur the lines between biblical truth and religious tradition. The Vatican has been trying to make Catholicism fully accepted by Protestants and other world religions. And they have succeeded with Protestants. Look at who actually controls the narrative in the entertainment industry. Although you only ever hear about one of these, the two biggest groups running things in Hollywood are Jews and Catholics. This completely shapes how faith is portrayed on the big and little screens. The majority of the time an Evangelical or a supposed Bible-believing Protestant is shown in a movie or TV show, they are depicted like they are bigoted, crazy, a serial killer, or whatever. Meanwhile, Catholics are almost always shown in a positive, reverent light. You simply do not see true Bible believers in modern movies, period.

This has created a huge issue because many celebrities are stepping forward claiming they are Christian, but they are actually practicing Catholicism, which is rooted in pagan traditions that run even deeper than Protestant syncretism. I am old enough to remember when Catholics just called themselves Catholics. Once, I even had someone tell me that they were Catholic first, and Christian second. I had someone else tell me that they were born Catholic and will die Catholic. Now, most simply call themselves Christians. And with the Charismatic Catholic movement growing like it has since the 1960s, there are Catholics that speak the same church lingo as Protestants. They believe in baptism of the Holy Spirit, emphasize spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues and healing, and sing the same contemporary Christian praise and worship songs, further blurring the lines drawn by Martin Luther. 

Because of the strict "only for you, not me" lockdowns, the vaccine mandates, and the rest of the government overreach we experienced during that era, people finally started to wake up to a lot of things. Conservatives began fighting back against the system, looking for a foundation. Sadly, in their search for stability, many are falling directly into a version of Christianity that completely lacks a true biblical understanding. 

SHIA LEBEOUF

Take Shia Lebeouf as a prime example. He is someone who has clearly been seeking truth, trying to find a way to get his life together after years of personal struggle. A couple of years ago he was in a movie about Padre Pio, a Catholic Priest. Before this he was agnostic and said he had no purpose to his life. He converted to Catholicism while making the film. While researching the role, he lived in a convent, began praying, and said to have found relief in the Rosary. He said that the rigid structure and ritual of Catholicism felt like the answer he was looking for. For someone with a chaotic life that would make sense. Sadly, he is looking in the wrong place. Mind you, he is half Jewish, even had a bar mitzvah, but he admits that he was never a practicing Jew. We know that scripture says that if you seek you will find. I have followed his struggle for a very long time because, like I have talked about before, I understand the struggle. Paul talks about this internal struggle. In Romans 7:15 he writes, "For I don't know what I am doing. For I don't practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do." He goes on to explain in verse 20 that sin dwelling within him is driving that behavior, "But if what I don't desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me." LeBeouf has always been open about his struggles and his relationship with God. And I respect that and we should pray that God opens his eyes and brings someone into his life to show him the truth. 

The same deception is being pushed through the mainstream prayer app Hallow. It is advertised all over conservative political sites and channels and promoted heavily by right-wing influencers. Even though they say it can be used by other faiths, it is a Catholic app. It is no coincidence that the primary faces pushing it are devout Catholics like Mark Wahlberg, Gwen Stefani, Jim Caviezel, Jonathan Roumie, and Chris Pratt. Before this I thought Pratt was a Protestant. Mel Gibson is on the app because of quotes from his character in the Wahlberg movie Father Stu.

This is why we have to test the fruits of anyone in Hollywood who claims they have become a believer. They use the right vocabulary and say good things from time to time, but their actions tell a completely different story.

DENZEL WASHINGTON

Look at Denzel Washington. Christians are always giving him praise because he talks about God, says all the right things, and even has a minister's license. He has a pretty clean reputation. Yet in a 2024 Gayety interview for Gladiator 2, he pretty much bragged about kissing a man for a scene in the movie. Washington said, "I actually kissed a man in the film but they cut it. I don't think they were ready for it." But about a month later there was a follow-up interview with Ridley Scott, who directed the film. At the Gladiator 2 premiere, in an interview with Variety, Scott said, when asked about Washington's statement, "No, that's bs, they never did. They acted the moment, it didn't happen." In a separate premiere interview, Washington tried clarifying, "It really is much ado about nothing. I kissed him on his hands, I gave him a peck and I killed him." He talked about it as if participating in something completely contrary to God's word was just a normal, wholesome part of his job. Did he actually lie? Who knows. If he did, it was initially to a gay site. So was he just trying to win favor with the gay community? Not sure, but that is what it sounds like.

CHRIS PRATT

We see something similar with Chris Pratt, who is hailed as a bold hero for the faith. He was raised Lutheran, went through an evangelical phase, worked with Jews for Jesus for a while, but married Katherine Schwarzenegger who is a Catholic and said they are raising their kids Catholic. In 2025 he said he was baptized in a Catholic Church and has believed in God since childhood. But let's be honest, Lutheran is just a junior version of the Catholic church. 

His career is packed with compromises that mock true biblical belief. In the MCU, he has played Peter Quill (Star Lord), one of the Guardians of the Galaxy since 2014, a literal demigod who is half-human and half-Celestial (a primordial entity that has god-like power to manipulate entire worlds). Basically he is Nephilim like in Genesis 6. This setup leads straight into blatant mockery of Jesus. In the 2018 Avengers: Infinity War, when Doctor Strange demands, "What master do you serve?" Pratt's character scoffs, "What master do I serve? What am I supposed to say!? Jesus?" Iron Man hits back, "You're from Earth?" Quill responds, "Not from Earth. From Missouri." Iron Man finishes, "Yeah, that's on Earth, dips**t." 

This entire script is designed to treat Jesus like He is just some small, localized god restricted to the human realm of Earth, while Pratt plays a character elevated to supreme cosmic divinity. 

In his early career on Parks and Rec, in Season 2, he chose to completely strip naked to surprise Amy Poehler on camera just to get a genuine shocked reaction for a scene. He even received a formal reprimand letter from NBC Human Resources warning him about proper protocol, which he proudly framed and hangs in his office as a big joke. He talks about this in an interview on the Graham Norton Show. In outtakes of that show there is also a scene where they are talking about comeback stories and he makes a very crude joke about Kim Kardashian's video that drove her to stardom. This type of crude joking and behavior is unfitting for a man of God who is put on such a pedestal by so many. But this is the kind of material he willingly participates in and puts out into the world. 

MEL GIBSON

Then you have men like Mel Gibson, creator of The Passion of the Christ, who is celebrated by Protestants but is famously known for his public, drunken, anti-Semitic tirades. Many people are quick to defend him by pointing to his public apologies, but a closer look at his track record reveals that these statements only came after he got caught. 

The public pattern goes back as far as 1995, when actress Winona Ryder reported that Gibson asked her if she was an "oven dodger." While his representatives disputed the claim, it matches the exact vitriol that came to light during his infamous 2006 DUI arrest. During that incident, he launched into a public anti-Semitic tirade, shouting vulgar slurs and declaring that the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. He later issued an official apology, claiming that hatred goes against his faith and calling his words the stupid ramblings of a drunkard, yet his actions behind closed doors continued to tell a completely different story. 

By 2012, during a dispute with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas over a shelved film project, Gibson was accused of using offensive slurs like "hebes" and "Jewboys," while explicitly referring to the Holocaust as mostly horses**t. But this volatile behavior went far beyond just religious slurs. 

Leaked audio recordings and documentation from 2010 and 2012 exposed Gibson repeatedly threatening to murder his then-partner, Oksana Grigorieva, with explicit statements about putting her in a rose garden or having her killed. 

While Gibson denies the accounts from Ryder and Eszterhas, the evidence completely dismantles the narrative that he is a peace-loving, godly man. He remains a practicing Catholic, and his life over the last several decades shows that a public relations apology is not the same thing as biblical repentance. 

MARK WAHLBERG

And Mark Wahlberg, who is a self-professed devout Catholic and family man, has built a public brand around his daily routine of early morning prayer and devotion. He uses his platform to promote fasting and prayer apps to a conservative audience, yet in his career he is known for playing raunchy and vulgar characters all throughout his life. He has spent decades earning millions starring in and producing crude comedies, adult-themed dramas, and violent films packed with profanity. This creates a double standard. He is telling millions of believers to download apps to seek God, while simultaneously generating wealth from media that feeds the flesh and promotes a lifestyle contrary to the Word of God. This is not a situation where a person is struggling privately; it is a calculation to maintain a profitable career in Hollywood while using a religious image to market faith to the church.

NICKI MINAJ

Weirdly enough, Nicki Minaj has become a prominent conservative voice, speaking out on societal issues, appearing at Turning Point U-S-A with Erika Kirk, addressing the U.N. regarding the massacre of Christians in Nigeria and more. And she has been unabashedly talking about faith, prayer and fasting. With her entire discography built on extreme vulgarity and depravity she is someone we need to keep in prayer. Like Shia LeBeouf, she seems to be trying to find her faith after a lifetime of debauchery. 

KANYE WEST

We saw this same thing play out with Kanye West during his "Jesus is King" era. The church instantly put him on a pedestal, inviting him to ministries and celebrating his sudden conversion. He was even on stage with Joel Osteen. When Osteen introduced him, the church went wild like they were at a Kanye concert. 

But Kanye's arrogance could not stop him from boasting about himself, even on stage at a church. He said, "All of that arrogance and confidence, and cockiness, that y'all see me use before God, it's now being used for Him." And the crowd applauded that prideful statement. He later said, "I told you about my arrogance and cockiness already... Now the greatest artist that God has ever created is now working for Him." Again, applause and cheers followed. Because he said a lot of the right churchy things with Osteen and in other interviews, he was accepted by the mainstream. That is the core of the problem with Christian celebrities. We want so much to have a celebrity believe like us and to be a Bible believer that we accept them and lift them up before they come close to showing any actual change. I never understood why churches do this. 

I remember back in the day there was this gangster church near me. They would evangelize at the mini-mart on the weekends when that spot was bumping. This one time, they had this guy with them who was talking trash to the very people the others were trying to witness to. I asked the minister about him and he said that the guy literally got saved a couple of weeks ago. Then why do you have him out here? He obviously is in no position to be doing this.

This type of stuff even happened to me personally. Back in the day there were multiple times when I started going to a new church and I was automatically put into a teaching or leading position or they would have me leading or helping with the youth group. I am talking about within the first couple of weeks of me going to that church! I do not know what they saw in me but I guess, even though I looked a little rough around the edges, I had zeal, I was unashamed of my faith and I had a lot of biblical knowledge. But still, I never understood this. I would think to myself, "You don't know me well enough to trust putting me in a position of authority like this. You have to test the fruit and the spirit first."

But I digress, Kanye was publicly a Christian for around five years until he went on a podcast stating he had a problem with Jesus because Jesus did not answer his prayers. Before and after his Christian era, he openly said that he was god, that he was the god of himself. But that should not have surprised anyone. He calls himself Yeezus and Ye for crying out loud, obviously riffing off the names of Jesus and God. His statements before being quote-unquote saved and his statements during that era should have given everyone pause. We should not be surprised that this prideful man is mad at Jesus and God just because he did not get exactly what he wanted. 

There are more celebrities I could talk about, but you get the point. People praise these celebrities for their conservative talking points, or because they use church lingo, but that does not mean they are true Bible believers. 

True faith is not about social status, influence or popularity. John gave a very direct instruction about this when he told believers to test the spirits to see whether they are from God in 1 John 4:1. Deception never shows up looking evil; it shows up looking familiar and using all the right words. It knows how to use the name of God without ever actually surrendering to Him. Paul even exposed this tactic when he stated that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light in 2 Corinthians 11:14.

We cannot afford to follow cultural hype. A faith that values influence over repentance and cultural relevance over biblical submission is completely empty. Jesus did not come to make faith trendy or to give people a comfortable vibe. He laid down the true standard when he told his disciples "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." Matthew 16:24. Not everyone who uses His name belongs to Him. If we want to believe it or not these public figures have a big influence on people because of their platforms and they face intense spiritual warfare, so they desperately need the body of Christ to pray for their genuine salvation, not just praise their casual mentions of God. We have to stop just watching the spectacle and start praying for their souls. We have to stay awake, stay grounded, and keep our eyes fixed firmly on the actual Word of God.
